Volunteering is one way that you can help puppy mill survivors learn about what life should be. Our volunteers take on many roles. Some come to keep the dog yard clean and well groomed. Mowing the grass and keeping the yard safe for the pups is an important job. For many of the dogs, this yard is their first experience with grass and sunshine. we strive to keep it as safe and welcoming as possible.
Many of our dogs have never been taught on walk on a leash. This is something that they must learn to make them more adoptable. Leash training is first done inside the fenced area to prevent any escapes. Once they are doing well, we move to the outside area. They are walked several times a day letting them experience different sights and smells and expanding their knowledge of the world around them.
Sometimes all the mill dogs need is someone to show them some love. It is an important step in their rehabilitation. Some of our volunteers spend time with the socially backward dogs, teaching them about human touch and kindness. It is a challenge for some dogs to trust, but the more they are exposed to gentle loving people, the sooner they learn that no one will ever hurt them again.
Play time is so important to the dogs. Volunteers can spend an hour or two tossing toys for the dogs. Most often they will not know what to do but it is a start in teaching them how to have fun. They will follow the lead of our long time residents and soon learn that humans and fun go hand in hand.
Some people choose to volunteer at events. This is a HUGE help to us as we try to educate the public about puppy mills. We often have several of our rescues at these events and try to have one person per dog. That means that the dogs are not being ignored while we work to teach the public. Volunteers walk the dogs around the crowds and answer questions about Safehaven. They cater to the needs of the dogs at the events making sure they have everything they might need.
No matter what you choose to do, your volunteering is most important We cannot do this alone. Please consider spending some time with the Safehaven rescues and showing them that life is good and love is grand.
